Sunflowers blooming everywhere

On stamps, envelopes, even walls, the sunflower motif popped up in artwork in and on many reader responses. Since the 17th century, sunflowers have been a favorite theme of artists, who could preserve their beauty in paint long past the blooms' short lives. Mention sunflowers and fine art, though, and the name Vincent van Gogh or an image of one of his 19th century sunflower paintings is likely to come to mind. Artists are still drawn to sunflowers for their bold color and interesting geometry. Plus they make people smile – an added benefit.
